Weekly Roundup: Week 48 – 2023

<– Week 47 HOME Week 49 –>

Sunday 11.26
Before we left Montreal, we visited Jean Talon Market. Our first stop was for cookies at La Fournée des Sucreries de l’Érable. Their caramel cookie is amazing. After that we stumbled upon a spicy smoked sausage with mustard and sauerkraut at Charcuterie Balkani Montreal. Last we went to Casa Di Toto to get Thomas a slice of pizza. I didn’t get a picture but I did get a bite and it was pretty good.

On the drive back from Montreal we stopped at Al’s French Frys in Burlington, VT. I got a double cheeseburger and fries of course, and I tried a sip of my son’s chocolate shake which was very good. Now it’s time to get back to eating better.

Monday 11.27
Day one of making up for all the food I ate on Thanksgiving and vacation. For lunch I had a chicken parm at DeNo’s which was decent. For dinner I made a salad with chicken and assorted veggies I had left over. That was very good and felt healthy after all the recent indulging.

Tuesday 11.28
I’m continuing to eat light. I made some fish for dinner. Mine was sockeye salmon, Kelly’s cod. For both I made a nice lemon-dill yogurt sauce and served it with rice and spinach.

Wednesday 11.29
Still trying to be light. I had a chicken sandwich. I wanted to put bacon on it, but my bacon had gone bad. So I just used up some lettuce and tomato. I also had some All Dressed chips that I brought back from Canada. I wish we sold those here!

Thursday 11.30
Still trying to be good because I know I am going to be eating a lot the next two days. I took Thomas to Nosh which is his favorite place to go, not for the food, but for the pool table. I thought I would be good and order a salad, but what I got was a huge piece of pecan crusted fried chicken next to a salad. It probably wasn’t very light but it was very good.

Friday 12.1
My dad arrived in town today and so Kelly and I were able to have a dinner, just the two of us. I picked Akame Nigri and Sake in Lexington. It is an incredible little place with just one employee (the chef-owner) and seating for six at the sushi bar. The meal was a fifteen course omakase with sake pairings. I enjoyed everything, of course the fish, but also the A5 Wagyu and the pork dumpling soup. I highly, highly recommend it.

Saturday 12.2
We took Thomas to the Holiday Pops at the Boston Symphony this morning. He even got to see Santa. After the show, we went to The Westland for a quick brunch. Well it turned out not to be very quick. In fact it took nearly an hour to get our food. The only thing saving them from being on my boycott forever list is that they gave us our meal for free. I had the Meat Lovers Egg Sandwich which was ok, though the potatoes weren’t worth eating.

For dinner, we went with Dad and Elias to Harvest. I started with a very good stuffed squash blossom appetizer. For my main course I had the venison loin and for dessert the Bananas Foster Cheesecake. As usual at Harvest, it was a lovely meal.

Top Three
Once again, I had a meal where it is nearly impossible to pick a single dish to highlight. In reality the three best things I ate were all at Akame. But to make it more interesting I’ll pick the wagyu. I say this with deep sincerity because I am not a wagyu fan. I generally find it way over rated. And since I’m just taking one thing from that meal, here are the three best things I ate:
3. Caramel Cookie (Sunday)
2. Stuffed Squash Blossoms (Saturday)
1. A5 Wagyu (Friday)
