Gilbert’s Chowder House is considered by some to be the best chowder in Portland. They actually have several types of chowder including corn-chicken chowder and seafood chili. Located on the Portland waterfront, this casual little chowder house has been family owned and operated since 1993.

Clams
Gilbert’s Chowder is not lacking in clams, but there is not any of that sweet clam flavor that makes a great chowder.
Cream and Consistency
This chowder is thick, a little too thick. It has a grainy consistency and isn’t creamy enough.
Potatoes
The potatoes are large but bland.
Garnish
Nothing exciting here, just the basic Westminster Oyster Crackers. With a large chowder you get two packs, but you do have the option to get the chowder in a bread bowl.
Everything Else
There is too much bacon here and an unfortunate lack of sweetness.
Not Chowder
How does a lobster grilled cheese sound? It’s worth a trip to Gilbert’s for that sandwich alone. The haddock sandwich is also very good.
The Verdict
We like Gilbert’s. It’s casual. It’s got a great location. The sandwiches are good. Still, this chowder isn’t one we want to get again. It’s thick and grainy, but the bigger issue is the flavor. It not only has too much bacon, but it lacks the sweetness of clams and onions. Go to Gilbert’s but not for the clam chowder.
