I received gin no. 099 when I went to St. Louis for my brother’s wedding. My dad had been in Brazil in April of 2024 and on the thirtieth, he picked me up a bottle of Amázzoni Rio Negro. In the picture he sent from Brazil, the price was 219.90 Brazilian Real, about $42 American. I got the bottle on May 11 and opened it for tasting on May 31.

There are a few botanicals in Amázzoni Rio Negro that give it a unique flavor, particularly cocoa, laurel, and Brazilian chestnut (what we call the Brazil nut). These combined with a heavy amount of juniper produce an almost savory gin that is deeply earthy and woody. Coriander, lemon, tangerine, and pink pepper round out the botanicals, but don’t have the same impact on the flavor.

They have given serious thought to packaging, with an intent to revive memories of an old medicine bottle. Raised glass ornamentation and lettering, give the bottles a unique look. Each bottle is individually numbered, ours is 077028. There is also a heavy alcohol content here, 51% ABV, but the alcohol doesn’t over power the strong flavors.
