We were in Kennebunkport when we got a recommendation for Cape Pier Chowder House. We drove out to the tiny Bickford Island, which sits in Cape Porpoise Harbor. There we found a beautiful view and the next stop on the Chowder Quest.

Clams
There is good clam flavor in this chowder, but just not enough actual bites of clam.
Cream and Consistency
This is a thickened chowder, but the texture is smooth and creamy not grainy.
Potatoes
There’s nothing wrong with Cape Pier’s potatoes, there are just way too many of them. They overwhelm the chowder so that every bite has a couple of pieces of potato.
Garnish
Nothing exciting here, just the basic Westminster Oyster Crackers.
Everything Else
This is a traditional chowder, but it is very well seasoned.
Not Chowder
I’ve been eating a lot of chowder lately, so I decided to get a hot dog and they make a good one. They also have steam lobsters and fried seafood.
The Verdict
The flavor of Cape Pier Chowder House’s chowder is top notch. The only thing that holds this chowder back is the ratio of potatoes to clams. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth the drive. It’s still a great chowder, plus the views from Bickford Island are beautiful.
