- Greenhook Ginsmiths is a gin-only distillery in Brooklyn, New York.
- American Dry is made with vacuum distillation using juniper and nine other botanicals.
- I purchased my bottle in a liquor store in Manhattan in 2017.
Greenhook Ginsmiths only makes gin. They make three different gins, American Dry, Old Tom, and Beach Plum. The base spirit of the American Gin in organic wheat. Using vacuum distillation, to that they add juniper plus nine other botanicals, cinnamon sticks, dried camomile, coriander seeds, elderberries, elderflower, galangal root, lemon peel, orris root, and sweet orange peel. The result is an award winning gin.
When I go to NYC, I almost always go to Manhattan. The only problem is that there is no gin distilled in Manhattan. Given the cost of operation there, the bottle would have to be very expensive to turn a profit. But they do make gin in Brooklyn, and there in the Greenpoint neighborhood is where you will find Greenhook. All that said, I bought my bottle at a liquor store on the Upper East Side when I was in NYC celebrating my 40th birthday in 2017.
Greenhook is a pricy $36, so maybe even in Brooklyn the cost of operation drives up the price. The flavor is too mild for me and the gin gets lost in even a simple gin and tonic. I tried it in a gin and tonic at Keen’s Chophouse and it was uninspiring. Neat, it is a juniper forward gin, with a strong 47% ABV. There are a lot of people who love this gin, but for me it is a little unexciting.
