- I received it as a gift from Sreyleak and Niki.
- It has a slight but noticeable taste of licorice.
Gastro Gin is a Dutch gin, the first from the Netherlands in my collection. In fact it is the first gin from Holland that I have tasted. I got the bottle as a gift when I went to Texas in November of 2024 to attend Sreyleak’s naturalization ceremony. Although this bottle was gifted to me on November 12, I didn’t open it until I returned home on November 15.
Chef Jonnie Boer, who has received three Michelin Stars for his restaurant De Librije, consulted on this project with the goal of making a truly gourmet gin. I’m having a difficult time nailing down the botanicals. Some sources point to five peppers but that gin is also labeled “Gin and Jonnie.” I found one list that had the botanicals as caraway, cardamom, fennel, licorice, long pepper, and orange peel. This is more consistent with what I am tasting, a slightly sweet gin with a noticeable taste of licorice.
Dutch Dry is 90 proof but drinks nicely both neat and in a gin and tonic. It comes in a funky bottle decorated by a skull with a top hat and a couple of knives. I hope to eventually find out more about it and will update when I do.
