We went to brunch at Abe & Louie’s after seeing the Holiday Pops at the BSO. We didn’t have an intention of having chowder, after all we were having brunch, but it was on the menu so we had to try it.

Clams
The clams in this chowder are perfectly tender and succulent.
Cream and Consistency
Abe & Louie’s chowder is creamy with a nice thickness.
Potatoes
The potatoes are uniform in size, tender without falling apart.
Garnish
In a shocking twist this chowder is served without crackers of any kind. There is a bread basket on the table, but the real garnish is bacon and chives.
Everything Else
Bacon. There is magically a ton of bacon in this chowder while not overpowering the other ingredients.
Not Chowder
Abe & Louie’s is a beautiful location on Boylston Street in Boston. The decor and serve are lovely and they make some very good steaks.
The Verdict
We didn’t expect to have chowder when we went to brunch at Abe & Louie’s, but it was hard to pass up the chance to theirs, and it’s a good thing we didn’t. This is one of the best chowders we have had. Every component was excellent from the tender clams to the perfect potatoes, but what set it apart was the bacon. Unlike many other chowders where the clams are lost behind the bacon, the Abe & Louie’s chowder is both bacony and balanced. It is absolutely delicious.
