We were on our way to Arizona to escape the winter weather that was delaying our flight to Arizona. With time on our hands we stopped to eat at Davio’s in Logan Airport. We got the chowder, a bold choice considering there was a Legal Sea Foods just steps away.

Clams
The clams are the best part of Davio’s chowder. They are big and tender. Their flavor is the predominant taste of this chowder.
Cream and Consistency
I didn’t think I would ever say this, but this chowder is too thick, perhaps because it wasn’t served hot enough. Whatever the case, the result is a goopy chowder.
Potatoes
The potatoes are cooked wonderfully, but there are not enough of them, and some are oversized.
Garnish
They provide the standard Westminster Oyster Crackers, but you actually need them in this chowder.
Everything Else
They use pancetta but it is strangely bland. While we don’t want a bacony chowder, I like to know that the pancetta is not a potato by taste, not just texture.
Not Chowder
We’ve been to the airport Davio’s twice and I haven’t really found anything I want to go back for. I’m optimistic that this has more to do with the airport than the brand.
The Verdict
It’s the airport. I’m sorry I’m judging their chowder based on what they serve at the airport, but I am. After all, Legal’s chowder is still good when I get it in the airport. At my first bite I realized this chowder was just not hot enough. It did have great clam flavor and lots of tender clams, enough that if the texture was better it might have received four stars. But as I ate it, I also realized it just lacked umph. The crackers helped, but you shouldn’t need crackers to make a great chowder.

I don’t care for a thick gloppy chowder, and it really needs to be all about the clams!
You would not have liked that one!
