I’m starting to get used to these insanely big roast beef sandwiches. The Big Beef at Anthony’s is easily double, maybe triple the size of the largest roast beef Kelly’s served back in the day. Anthony’s in Tewksbury does some crazy things with their beef, including one called the Greek Beef with lettuce, tomato, feta cheese, onion rings and house dressing. It’s tempting but to make things fair I’m just getting the large beef three way. I did try the steak and cheese egg roll which certainly had me in a good mood while eating this sandwich.
The Big Beef is priced at $11.99 which is reasonable for how much meat they serve. There is lots of bbq sauce and a healthy squeeze of mayo on top. A single slice of cheese separates the beef from the toasted sesame seed bun. Like most of the others we’ve tried, it’s big, messy, and hard to eat.
The Verdict: ✧✧
Our third beef is the first to earn two stars, and really it’s not far away from three. The beef itself is sliced beautifully, thin but not too thin. The bun is nicely toasted and there is a good balance between sauce and mayo. I would have enjoyed a little more salt and pepper, but it wasn’t bland. The biggest draw back for me was the cheese. With this much sauce and meat, I needed more than a single slice of cheese. Throw a couple more on there and this might have earned three stars.
