Brown’s Lobster Pound is a family favorite and always worth a stop on the way up to Hampton Beach, but it’s been a while since I’ve had their clam chowder. Is there chowder as good as the rest of the menu? Will their chowder beat their rival across the street? Let’s go and find out.
Small – $6.95 Large – $10.95

Clams
There are some big hunks of clam in this chowder. It’s the most impressive thing about it.
Cream and Consistency
Brown’s chowder is slightly thick and quite creamy.
Potatoes
The potatoes are disappointing. They are slightly overcooked which gives them a mealy consistency.
Garnish
Nothing exciting here, just the basic Westminster Oyster Crackers.
Everything Else
This is a traditional chowder, nothing out of the ordinary.
Not Chowder
Lot’s good choices at Brown’s. They are famous for their lobsters, but if you want something you won’t find many other places, go for some steamers with clarified butter.
The Verdict
This is a good chowder with big pieces of clam. The flavor is a little mild though and the quality of the potatoes is also a strike against it. There is no reason to avoid this chowder, but it’s not the reason to go there. But whatever you like at Brown’s, a small clam chowder on the side is a good choice.
