Au Pied de Cochon – Montreal

  • Au Pied de Cochon specializes in Canadian comfort food with an emphasis on foie gras.
  • Their most famous dish is Canard en Conserve, “Duck in a Can.”
  • In addition to good food, they make their own gin and cider.

I found Au Pied de Cochon because they have a sugar shack outside of Montreal. I was reading about it and saw that they also operated a restaurant in the city, which was good because the window to visit the sugar shack is just two months. In addition to food, Au Pied de Cochon makes cider and gin. Gin Matante is no. 083 of The Collection.

Au Pied de Cochon has an entire section of their menu dedicated to foie gras. The foie gras nigiri features five large portions of fatty goodness over maple rice. Their signature dish, Canard en Conserve or Duck in a Can features a sous vide duck breast, vegetables, and foie gras all cooked in the can. The can is brought to the table and the server opens it in front of you, serving it over dressed toast.

Both dishes are special enough that they need to be tried, but other menu items are excellent as well. In particular, try the pudding chômeur for dessert. It’s a delicious, traditional Quebecois treat. The cozy restaurant is located on a restaurant filled street about a mile west of downtown. In 2024, it was named the 51st best restaurant in Canada and 9th best in Montreal. Well worth a visit.
