One Michelin Star

Tail Up Goat gets its name from a Caribbean saying about how to tell the difference between goats and sheep. Tail up, goat. Tail down, sheep. Located on the edge of Adams Morgan, not far from the National Zoo, this laid-back neighborhood spot has gotten a little less laid-back over the years. Once primarily a la carte, the dining room now serves only a tasting menu. Still, the atmosphere remains casual.

The six course tasting menu begins with a selection of snacks, including a cruditรฉ with an incredible white miso dip. Diners have a choice of three mains. The Roseda Farms beef is luxurious and served with a potato pave that should not be missed. A cheese course and dessert rounds out the meal.

Two different wine pairings are available. Audrey’s pairing is younger but outstanding wines, the highlight of which was a rose from Common Wealth Crush in the Shenandoah Valley. Bill’s pairing is a little more traditional and includes a 2013 Pinot Gris Grand Cru and a 2011 Bordeaux. Other highlights of the bar menu include a Virginia Rye Whiskey and an Amaro by DC’s Don Ciccio & Figli.

The tasting menu is available at $130. The wine pairings are an additional $95 for audrey’s or $155 for bill’s. Tail Up Goat adds a 22% service charge to every bill. The price for two with tax was just under $750.
