Sea Level Oyster Bar – ✧✧✧

It has been a while since we tried a new chowder. We were up in Newburyport and stopped in Sea Level Oyster Bar. They actually serve fries covered in chowder, but we decided to try it more traditionally in a cup. The chowder quest is back!

cup $10.00 bowl $17.00

Clams

A good amount of clams of various sizes. Unfortunately some texture issues with them.

Cream and Consistency

This chowder is creamy and thick, very nice.

Potatoes

The potatoes had very good texture, but could have used a little more salt.

Garnish

Traditional Westminster Oyster Crackers.

Everything Else

I don’t know if there is anything else in this chowder. There is not much more than clams, cream, and potatoes.

Not Chowder

Chowder fries sounds pretty interesting, but there is a lot to choose from on this menu. The clam pizza and crab cake were both decent.

The Verdict

This chowder was oh so close to earning a four. The consistency and potatoes were both excellent. The clams were a little tough and it needed a little more onion or celery or something to put it over the top. It’s not a restaurant I’m in a hurry to return to, (There are too many good spots in Newburyport.) but I would sneak in to try their chowder fries.
