Berkshire Mountain Distillers

I started collecting Ethereal Gin early on. It is a local gin produced by Berkshire Mountain Distillers which was founded in Sheffield, MA in 2007. I finally visited in August of 2024, sampled several gins, and purchased no. 103. The distillery has a welcoming outdoor space, featuring live music in good weather. There’s also a green house where they grow their own herbs and botanicals. Inside, there is more room for tasting, the chance to view the distilling floor, and bottles for sale. It’s a long ride from Boston, but combined with other activities in the area it makes for a great day trip.

gin no. 024 – Ethereal Batch 7

  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ Ethereal Gin is a collection of limited edition batches using various botanicals.
  • Batch 7 was the first Ethereal Gin I added to the collection.
  • It is a lemony gin and makes a very nice gin and tonic.

Ethereal Gins are limited edition gins from Berkshire Mountain Distiller. Each batch is different using different botanicals to make an entirely new gin. The first Ethereal I tried and the first I added to my collection was Batch 7. It is a lemony gin with Lemon peel, elderberry and rosehips. Maybe that is why it comes in a bright yellow bottle. It makes a very nice gin and tonic.

gin no. 025 – Ethereal Batch 11

  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ Ethereal Gin is a collection of limited edition batches using various botanicals.
  • Batch 11 is a stronger version of their Greylock Gin with the addition of Cubeb and Allspice.
  • Sadly, this bottle fell off a shelf and is gone.

I don’t even have a picture to remember it by. I was moving bottles and this one fell off the shelf and shattered, the gin lost. I had only drank about a third of the bottle. It’s a sad story. Here are the tasting notes from the distiller: This one is for our Greylock fans! A double dose
of our Greylock botanicals rounded out with some Cubeb and Allspice. A very viscous and solid gin – something to sink your teeth into!
And here’s the distillery’s picture of Batch 11.

gin no. 026 – Ethereal Batch 12

  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ Ethereal Gin is a collection of limited edition batches using various botanicals.
  • Ethereal Batch 12 mixes citrus and berry fruit with a little spice.

I really enjoyed this bottle of Ethereal and as a result it is nearly empty. There are probably two or three gin and tonics left in the bottle, but I expect it to be gone soon. Here are the distiller’s notes: A wonderful mix of citrus, berry fruit and a dash of spice. Full bodied yet uplifting, notes of grapefruit, hibiscus, lemongrass, elderflower and black pepper. Perfectly at home in a gin and tonic or in your favorite classic cocktail.

gin no. 027 – Ethereal Batch 13

  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ Ethereal Gin is a collection of limited edition batches using various botanicals.
  • Ethereal Batch 13 is described as a sweet savory blend with plenty of citrus.

I haven’t spent too much time with this bottle. I started to just add each edition to the collection at one point, but I was busy drinking other things. I’ll have to give this and Batch 15 a try soon. They are both mostly full. Here are the distiller’s notes: A great juxtaposition of savory and sweet (but not too sweet), that is layered over multiple levels of citrus–lemon, lime, grapefruit and orange–not to mention a bevvy of other hand selected botanicals. This could just be your lucky number 13.

gin no. 028 – Ethereal Batch 15

  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ Ethereal Gin is a collection of limited edition batches using various botanicals.
  • Ethereal Batch 15 is a lemon gin with lemon peel, lemongrass, and lemon verbena.
  • The lemongrass, lemon verbena, and rosemary are grown at the distillery.

Another bottle that is mostly full. I missed batch 14 when I was trying to collect them all, but bought 15 hoping I’d fill in. When I couldn’t I stopped buying them. At that point my local gin collection was getting big and I started focusing on out of town gin. Here are the distiller’s notes: Loaded up with lots of lemon. Lemon peel, lemongrass and lemon verbena, this gin screams citrus and spice balanced by homegrown rosemary and shredded ginger followed up with a beautiful dry juniper finish. This batch is especially exciting given that the lemongrass, Lemon verbena and rosemary are grown right here at our distillery’s gardens.

gin no. 094 – Greylock Gin

  • Greylock is the flagship gin for Berkshire Mountain Distillers.
  • A solid, clean expression of London Dry gin that makes a lovely G&T.
  • I received this bottle as a gift from my coworker Julie.

Berkshire Mountain Distillers makes so many different gins that Greylock Gin almost gets lost, and I think that is a shame. This isn’t a unique gin, but it is a very good expression of London Dry. They use seven botanicals to create a light, sweet gin that is lovely in a gin and tonic: Juniper Berry, Angelica Root, Orris Root, Licorice Root, Orange Peel, Coriander Seed, and Cinnamon.

I got my bottle as a gift from my coworker Julie, but I had tasted Gerylock several times, mostly at The Bancroft. When I need to buy a replacement bottle, I will cost me around $35. Greylock Gin, named for Mount Greylock in Western Massachusetts, is only 80 proof, making it easily sippable, but not really exciting enough for that. This is a much better summer gin, enjoyed in a Colins or a G&T.

gin no. 103 – Barreled Ethereal Expression No. 7

  • This expression of Barreled Ethereal was aged for seven years in bourbon casks.
  • Berkshire Mountain Distillers starts with one of their Stormy Ethereal Gins which gives this aged gin a little extra kick.
  • I bought this bottle at the distillery on August 31, 2024.

After many years of wanting to visit, I finally got to Berkshire Mountain Distillers on August 31, 2024. It was a day trip out to the Berkshires for my birthday weekend. There were many gins to choose from that day, but the one I decided to buy was the Barreled Ethereal.

This gin starts as Ethereal Stormy, the spicy version of Ethereal Gin. Then they age it in Berkshire Bourbon casks for a full seven years. Seven years is longer than a lot of bourbons are aged. The result is a smooth but complex gin. The tasting notes suggest apple, pear, and chili pepper.

The price of Barreled Ethereal is $40, and like all of the Berkshire Mountain Ethereal gins, it is a limited edition. It is 86 proof, but drinks smooth and can be enjoyed neat or in a cocktail. Of the five gins I tried that day, this is the one I picked, so that tells you it’s pretty good.
