Bib Gourmand
Celebrity chef Jose Andres offers up Mexican small plates just steps from the National Mall. Named for the sacred fir native to central Mexico where monarchs rest after their journey south, the atmosphere takes an opposing, lively, self-described Mexico City vibe.
The bar program leans on tequila and mezcal with excellent margaritas including Josรฉ Andrรฉsโ personal favorite, the Oyamel, with โSalt Airโ, Milagro Blanco, Magdala, and lime. During the Cherry Blossom Festival a special variation, the Petalo de Rosa Margarita, combines Codigo Rosa Tequila, Magdala, lime, and Cherry Blossom Air.
Menu highlights include a variety of tacos, but don’t miss the Frijoles Refritos con Queso. These cheesy black beans served with fresh blue corn tortillas are cooked with spiced pork lard and topped with red onion and crema. The Tamal Verde is equally special with shredded chicken and tomatillo sauce. No matter the order, add the housemade salsas, two red and two green.
Although a bib gourmand, it’s easy to run up a large bill with cocktails and many small plates. A meal for two was almost $300.
