Ginger Japanese Cuisine

Ginger is the top sushi spot in Bedford, MA
They were my first regular sushi restaurant, before Karma came to Concord.
A longtime favorite is the shumai served with yellow mustard.
A more recent favorite is the yuzu yellowtail roll.

Ginger Japanese Restaurant has been serving me, and the Town of Bedford, sushi for fifteen or twenty years. Their old brick building was sadly torn down and replaced with a modern building, but that didn’t stop Ginger. They have a photo of the demolition in their vestibule.

It is a small spot, made slightly smaller by COVID and the rise in takeout. The menu is rather big for a restaurant its size. Sushi of course, but also teriyaki, tempura, donburi, and udon. There is also a large selection of appetizers to choose from.

There’s one dish at Ginger that I get nearly every time I go. That’s the shumai, steamed shrimp dumplings, curiously served with yellow mustard. We aren’t talking Chinese mustard. This tastes like old fashioned hot dog mustard, but for some reason it really works and it’s always delicious.

More recently we really enjoyed the yuzu yellowtail roll. This maki roll contains fried onion, cucumber, and spicy crumb, wrapped with seared yellowtail and topped with yuzu sauce and yuzu tobiko. Although I generally prefer raw yellowtail, this torched version was delicious and satisfying.

Other sushi has been fresh and reliable. We’ve also ordered the beef negimaki, the yakitori, and the creamy crab croquette, all delicious. To drink, I’ve always enjoyed the Samurai.

Ginger is a very nice neighborhood restaurant. While we don’t go there as often since the opening of Karma, we always have a lovely meal when we do. The food is good, the people are friendly, and the prices are reasonable, making Ginger a great value. While people aren’t going to drive far to go to Ginger, those nearby will visit regularly.
