travel bite: Al’s French Frys – South Burlington, VT

December 2, 2023

The list of James Beard America’s Classics is a great lead to find longstanding neighborhood restaurants and that’s how I first heard about Al’s French Frys. Located in South Burlington, VT and dating back to 1940’s, Al’s is famous for french “frys.” It has been a regular stop for us on trips to and through Burlington, most recently as we drove back from Montreal.

In addition to fries, they have burgers, dogs, and seafood. In the summertime, there is an outdoor ice cream counter, but even in colder months you can get a very good creamy chocolate milkshake. I really like the minute steak sandwich, thin sliced steak available as either a single or double. Of course, the star of the show is the fresh cut fries which are piping hot and delicious. There’s no chance of getting a cold soggy fry that has been sitting around, and they are the real reason you want to stop at Al’s.

The style is 1950’s retro and with a bright light up sign, black and white checkered floors, and red booths and stools. The vibe is casual, with the expected amount of teens and guys grabbing a quick bite. It’s only a minute off I-89 so whether you are heading to Burlington or just driving by, Al’s is worth a stop.
