One of our favorite cheeses is Challerhocker and Sternenberger Bergkäse is similar. Although not as pungent a Challerhocker the flavor profile is very close. Sternenberger Bergkäse is an alpine-style cow’s milk cheese produced in the Swiss town of Sternenberg by Kaeserei Rietwies.
Sternenberger Bergkäse is brine washed and aged for a minimum of five months and up to a year. The flavor is mild but nutty. It is an accessible, versatile cheese that most everyone will enjoy.
We purchased a small slice at Formaggio Kitchen for New Year’s Eve 2023 for $31.95 per pound. While we don’t like it quite as much as Challerhocker because of it’s more mild flavor, it’s still a very good Alpine cheese that we would get again.
