Beppie

The Concord Cheese Shop had just opened up a wheel of Beppie when I stopped in asking for an interesting sheep’s milk cheese. This organic gouda is produced in Ouddorp in The Netherlands. The wheels are aged on wooden shelves for eight months or more. They suggested that the first bite had maple notes, and sure enough it did.

Many describe Beppie as nutty, but I don’t taste that. What strikes me after the sweetness is a pleasant sourness. It isn’t funky, but it is strong in flavor. Beppie is creamy, but has nice crystallization as well, and I like the rich golden color.

The price at The Cheese Shop is $29.99 per pound. There are few sheep’s milk goudas made in The Netherlands. It’s a nice addition to a cheese board, adding uniqueness and color. My only suggestion would be to avoid pickled vegetables as they mute it’s interesting sourness.
