The Druid – Fish Chowder

We have tried twenty-two chowders and have a good feel for what makes a great clam chowder. Armed with that knowledge, for the first time, The Chowder Quest steps away from clam chowder, not very far away. The Druid’s chowder does have clams, but they aren’t the focus and as a result we didn’t think it was right to use our rubric. So here is our first look at a fish chowder.

The Description

The Druid is a great Irish bar located in Inman Square in Cambridge. They are known for their fish and chips and their fish sandwich, both of which are great. Even better is the Sausage, Beans, and Mashed. They also have an Irish Seafood Stew, but we went to try the Fish Chowder. It is made with smoked salmon, cod, clams, and potatoes. They serve brown bread on the side. The skin-on potatoes are large and the clams are in the shell. There is an abundance of fish which is the star of the dish. The smoked salmon is particularly excellent.

The Verdict

The clams in this chowder are very good, but the smoked salmon is the star of the dish. It has a robust flavor and every bite that includes it is excellent. The cod is also quite good. The potatoes are large and need to be cut to be enjoyed. The broth would benefit from more cream. Overall, this is a good chowder, but we will be digging into the Fish and Chips and the Sausage more often.
