Brattleboro is the anthesis of the Vermont I love. It’s urban. It’s gritty. It’s brick. When I go to Vermont, I want to see trees and mountains and streams and covered bridges. But I also get hungry, and Brattleboro has places to eat, so on our way home from cheese farms, we stopped.

Starving, we stumbled upon Kipling’s Tavern, a small place with about ten tables and of course a bar. I went for the least healthy thing on the menu. The “Fatty Melt” is a patty melt (of course) but with the addition of bacon. You can get your burger with “some pink” or “no pink.” Those were the exact options the waitress gave us. I went with “some pink” though mine came out “pretty pink”, and I won’t ever complain about that.

The burger was delicious. The fries were solid too. I also enjoyed a Pegu Club cocktail and gin and tonic made with Snowdrop Gin from Saxtons River Distilling in Brattleboro. My wife liked her burger and my son crushed a grilled cheese. The service was incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was casual and relaxed. My only complaint was that the booth was a little small for someone my height. Otherwise, everything was great. I’d rather spend my time in Vermont outside of Brattleboro, but if I’m in Brattleboro I sure don’t mind spending time at Kipling’s.
