Weekly Roundup: Week 27 – 2023

<– Week 26 HOME Week 28 –>

Sunday 7.2
Last year we had dinner at Lucky Rooster (one of my favorite Hilton Head restaurants), but this year we opted for brunch instead. My son got chicken fingers and fries, so of course I helped him eat the chicken. Kelly and I got deviled eggs and then I got the brunch burger and fries. The burger was good, but it was described as a smash burger when really it was thick enough that it should have been cooked to temperature. It would have been amazing if it had been medium rare instead of well done. I ended up not eating anything else today.

Monday 7.3
I didn’t have dinner yesterday so I was pretty hungry around lunch time. We went to Lowcountry Backyard, another Hilton Head favorite. I love their purloo, follow the link for more information about it. Unfortunately, I went with the meatloaf which wasn’t as good. Fortunately, my wife got the purloo so I got to have some it. I also got the banana pudding which is always great and a few Front Porch cocktails which is my favorite drink there.

For dinner, we decided to go back to Giuseppi’s which we tried last year when we visited HHI. I really just wanted to get my son a slice of pizza, but what I ate was really great. I started with some buffalo wings, side of honey mustard of course. Then I got a slice of pizza. You can put on it whatever you like. There aren’t many places where you can get a single slice in any flavor. I went with chicken, ham, and jalapeno. For dessert Kelly and I shared a slice of key lime pie.

Tuesday 7.4
Happy Fourth of July. I spent most of the day by the pool and lucky for me the hotel was having a cookout for the Fourth. I got a burger topped with cheese and canadian bacon, one of the most underrated meat products. Then for dinner we went back to Giuseppi’s. We decided to try sandwiches tonight. I got a meatball sub which was almost as good as the one at Mario’s. Kelly got a buffalo chicken “weggie” which is a sandwich but using pizza crust for the bread. It isn’t like a calzone because it isn’t closed up, just folded over. We shared and we also shared a slice of white pizza, though she ate most of it before I could get a bite. Then we went and watched fireworks.

Wednesday 7.5
On Monday, we tried to go to Hilton Head Distillery. It has always been a favorite of ours. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t let us in with our son, even though he had been there last year and the year before. They lost a good customer with that change. But their loss is our gain, because on the way out of Hilton Head, we stopped at Burnt Church Distillery which was wonderful. In addition to sampling gin (and buying gin no. 080), whiskey, and moonshine, we enjoyed bbq chicken nachos, oven tater tots, and pimento cheese dip. We will be back for sure.

For dinner we went to Vic’s on the River in Savannah. It was the first restaurant my wife and I went to on our first trip to Savannah. On this visit we shared a beef carpaccio to begin. I ordered the she crab soup which I had on my first visit. It was still rich and delicious. My wife got spicy shrimp, which was seriously spicy and a side of andouille sausage hash. I tried both and enjoyed. After dinner we stopped by River Street Sweets and I got a praline.

Thursday 7.6
Time to go home. We grabbed a cuban panini from The Great American Bagel Panini at the airport before our flight. When we got home, I had a roast beef sub from New London. I also had a chocolate praline I got in Savannah at River Street Sweets. It’s good to be home.

Friday 7.7
Back on the scale this morning and my weight was up but not horribly from vacation. Still I tried to eat light today. I had a roast beef sandwich with chips for lunch. I munched on a little more throughout the day and then had a bowl of ice cream for lunch.

Saturday 7.1
With a day of dieting behind me, my weight was back to normal. So of course, I quickly fell off my diet. I had a ham and cheese for lunch with some chips my son picked out. They were ketchup and french fry Pringles. I don’t know why they need to say french fry because that’s just potato taste, but anyway, they were better than I expected.

For dinner we went to Colette with Michael and Ryleigh, We got the burrata bruschetta to start which was very good. We also got the cheese plate with St. Stephen from New York and Invierno from Vermont Shepherd. We ordered the duck and pork but they gave us the bresaola instead of the pork. So then we got which was probably a huge portion.

For my main course I got halibut with crab ravioli and spinach. I thought it was good but Michael got the same thing and said his fish was over cooked. We skipped dessert and went home for some ice cream with strawberry-rhubarb sauce.

Top Three
Both burgers I ate this week were good and it is hard choosing between them. It’s also hard to choose between the banana pudding and the purloo at Lowcountry. So neither of them made the list. I also had a hard time chosing between the wings and the meatballs at Giuseppi’s. But in the end I decided to go with the wings. Here are the three best things I ate:
3. Burrata Bruschetta (Saturday)
2. Buffalo Wings (Monday)
1. She Crab Soup (Wednesday)

    1. It is a Lowcountry version of jambalaya, rice and seafood. It has West African roots and is a traditional dish of the Gullah community in costal South Carolina.
