Monthly Roundup: November – 2024

<–Oct 2024 HOME Dec 2024 –>

I still haven’t published August and September, but I did keep up with October. I don’t have a lot planned for this month, and I’m really trying to lose some pounds before the new year, so we will see how it goes.

November 2
Dinner at BRONWYN: Bretzel, Best Wurst, Pickled Eggs, Sauerbraten, Schnitzel.

November 3
Lunch at Ken’s in Bedford: Plymouth Rock, a turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberries.

November 4
Kelly needed me to make a quiche for her to take to work, so I also made a bacon-leek frittata and a salad for our dinner.

November 5
Before voting and going home to watch the results, a stop at the bar at Karma: crispy calamari – which we highly recommend, kiss of fire maki – very good, and my go to – saba nigiri.

November 6
In September I had a really good chicken parm at Riverside Pizza. Today I tried the classic Greek. It is not as good. The one at DeNo’s is better.

November 8
We had a family dinner at The Bancroft. I got the filet and brussels sprouts. I feel like their food is slipping a bit. The filet was good, the brussels weren’t. The Frogs Leap Cab was great.

November 9
We had to go to Newburyport tonight and stopped at Sea Level Oyster Bar. We started with a cup of their chowder, which was good. Then we got the white clam pizza and a crab cake. The food was solid over all but not good enough to go back for.

November 10
I got invited to dinner at Uncle Rick’s (not my uncle but I still call him that). He made pheasant stifado from birds he hunted himself. It was very good. After dinner I also tried a new gin at The Keep, Lighthouse Gin from New Zealand.

November 12
I traveled to Houston today to see Sreyleak get her citizenship. I arrived late and we stopped at On the Kirb on the way from the airport. We got garlic parmesan wings and brussels sprouts. The brussels were particularly good.

November 13
This morning Sreyleak became a US citizen. After the swearing in, guests were asked to leave while new citizens completed paperwork. Niki and I took a walk down the street to a hole in the wall donut store called Snowflake Donut. The breakfast burrito with bacon, egg, and cheese was just ok, but the glazed donut was good and the boudin kolache, with pork and rice, was awesome.

For dinner we went to The Chef’s Table, a South African inspired restaurant northwest of downtown Houston. We started with steak tartare and octopus. Then I tried the impala. I’d never had it before and enjoyed that it had a unique taste. For dessert I had an amazing sticky toffee pudding. I also tried two new gins, Hendrick’s Grand Cabaret and then after dinner, KI NO BI at Giau Bar n Bites.

November 14
Time for one last meal in Texas before I head back and how can I say no to Michelin Star BBQ. We feasted at Corkscrew BBQ, which was hard given how much we ate last night. For the three of us we had, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, ribs, brisket tacos, baked beans, mac n cheese and peach cobbler.

November 16
I made Kelly breakfast this morning: bacon, fried egg, toast with blueberry jam. For dinner I made a soup with butternut squash, celeriac, leek, carrot, and sage. I garnished it with bacon and scallions.

November 17
My only meal today was brunch at Woods Hill Table. Kelly and I shared skillet coffee cake and a side of sausage. Then I had the Cubano. All was good, but the service wasn’t great, and the only thing I’d get again would be the sausage.

November 18
We tried the new Smith & Wollensky in Burlington. The chowder was good but it’s made by Legal Sea Foods so it should be. I’m trying to find out if it’s the exact recipe. We also got the steak tartare with bone marrow which is mixed table side. It’s excellent. On the other hand, the brussels sprouts were awful, never will ttry those again. Also, get the Tennessee Sidecar to drink, delicious.

November 20
I made a tomato-leek sauce for a crab and lobster ravioli that I picked up at Whole Foods and a simple salad.

November 22
Breakfast was banana bread at Haute Coffee. Dinner was filet, brussels, and potatoes at home.

November 23
Thomas and I went to school today for the Christmas Bazaar. On the way home we stopped at Riverside Pizza and Thomas got chicken fingers and fries. He is taking pictures of them now for an Instagram called hungy.thomas. It’s fun to see him copy me. The chicken and fries weren’t too good though.

For dinner, I met up with Michael and Sotheara in Cambridge. We tried The Maharaja. I got the chicken korma which was fine but too bland. Michael’s lamb and Sotheara’s fish weren’t any more interesting. It wasn’t bad, but not worth going back to. It does have a nice view. Afterwords we went to Charlie’s Kitchen for drinks and got some Nashville Hot Wings. They were better than the Indian.

November 25
Dinner: Swordfish, reversed seared, with romesco sauce and a side of asparagus.

November 26
First time trying a burger at Brother’s. It was just ok, but I would get it again.

November 28
Happy Thanksgiving! I’m not feeling great, but I still did some cooking. I made stuffing and green bean casserole. The rest was prepared by others but it was all delicious.

November 30
I have been sick, but I wasn’t going to miss the wedding we were invited to at The Briar Barn Inn. The food was good provided by their restaurant, Grove. There was a soup and salad course. Then, I got the chicken because it came with brussels sprouts. I should have taken a picture of the cake. It was really good too.

Best of the month
The best thing I ate all month is easy, Michelin star bbq, but after that it gets a little harder. In the running is the calamari at Karma, the romesco sauce I made, Thanksgiving dinner, the kolache I tried in Houston, the impala I tried for the first time, the hunted pheasant from Uncle Rick, and of course always the German food at Bronwyn.

Overall my three best meals were:
Corkscrew BBQ
Thanksgiving dinner
Crispy Calamari at Karma
